I found these creep-tastic "rat lights" while surfing on
Design Milk the other day. WHOA. Named "
Rattus Norvegicus Rex," these fixtures were created with prototyped rats 3-D scanned from a taxidermy piece, then slipcast in porcelain. These fancifully freaky creatures were thought up by Columbus, Ohio-based
Nonfiction Design Collective. In their own words, "Non Fiction is a design collective based in Columbus, Ohio, interested in merging the worlds of ceramics & printmaking and the remaking and reuse of industrial cast-offs." Such an interesting concept! While I've heard about other designers turning junk into art, the methods implemented by Nonfiction are particularly interesting. Nonfiction combines outdated processes like thermofax and letterpressing with CNC milling and rapid prototyping to create pieces that straddle the line between "intent and accident." Some might call it disgusting, some might call it art. Either way, it's controversial stuff!
Reading about these rat lights of course got me to further explore the designer's home page where I found a bunch of other interesting, unique and often just plain bizarre lights. Take a look and let me know what you think! You can go directly to their website to
order specific pieces. To give you an idea of pricing, the rat chandelier will set you back about $1,250! Lights out until next time! -
