Case in point, Saazs, a French company specializing in state of the art lighting has created a series of lamps that are designed to last around 20 years (or 500,000 hours). While no where near as long lasting as the 200 year gravity powered LED lights, 20 years is quite a big deal. Designed by Tomas Erel, these long-lasting Planilum lights are supposedly more energy efficient than your run of the mill incandescent lights. The lights also use non-toxic gases and materials in the production and finishing. According to the company's website, the Planilum technology was co-developed for 6 years by Saazs and Saint Gobain Innovations, making it the first "light-emitting material," an active glass with light emitting patterns.

A mere 20mm (0.8 inches) thick, Planilum lights are composed of 4 layers of glass, phosphorescent compounds, they are RoHS certified, and 90% recyclable. What about the quality of light? Well, since it doesn't radiate out from a bulb but rather from the material itself, the intensity is distributed over the entire surface of the material - both sides! Pure and soothing, the light is close to body temperature, eliminating the need for lamp shades and diffusers. The light emitted from a Planilum light is completely 'touchable.' How cool is that! Looks like they are pretty expensive though. Prices aren't even listed on the site but you can contact Saazs directly to inquire. Lights out until next time! - Via TreeHugger & Saazs
