DIY Lampshades by Eddie Ross

Well, last night ended the second season of Bravo's Top Design. As sad as a winter without Top Design is, I'm quite pleased with who won! I won't go into detail, but the winner created an AWESOME chandelier out of some disposable dinnerware! Genius!

Anyway, one of my favorite contestants this past season was the ever fabulous Eddie Ross. Although he was eliminated in part one of the finale, I found his designs to be (for the most part) classy and elegant. Too often, his design aesthetic was labeled as "granny" by the judges. I guess they were just calling it dated and old fashioned, but there were quite a few rooms that I absolutely loved! I don't consider my tastes to be grannylicious at all, just laid back, clean and simple. Regardless of your thoughts on Eddie, one thing was clear - his eye for detail is beyond compare. Ross is clearly a master of his craft.

On his blog, Eddie Ross (one of my daily reads), Eddie talks about making your own custom lampshades. Eddie suggests purchasing plain white lampshades, which are generally pretty inexpensive if you know where to shop. If you're lucky, you can even find lampshades at your local Goodwill or Salvation Army. Retail stores like Target, Wallmart or Bed Bath and Beyond also have cheap lampshades. Looking at each lampshade as a blank canvas, Ross purchased some spray paint, spike tape and cotton cloth (stage marking) tape from his local hardware store and was on his way to creating some fabulous new lampshades! What a great idea! That guy is always thinking! Lights out until next time! - Via Eddie Ross
