Part of an annual holiday tradition in New York City that attracts about 500,000 visitors each year, the 80 year-old, 72-foot Norway Spruce will be adorned with 30,000 energy efficient LED Christmas lights! As if that wasn't "green" enough, the tree lights are going to be powered totally by solar panels! According to Inhabitat, the tree will be powered by a solar power station located on top of 45 Rockefeller Plaza. 363 GE Solar panels will be fed back into the building to help reduce the peak energy demand from the grid. This will reduce the power used by nearly 60 percent! To take it a step further, Tishman Speyer, organizers of the event (who also own the Radio City Music Hall building), is being even more environmentally responsible by taking steps to restore the spot in Hamilton, New Jersey, where the tree was uprooted.
The tree stays up until January 9th, 2009, after which it will be recycled and turned into lumber to be used by Habitat For Humanity. How fabulous is this? Talk about getting into the Christmas spirit, hopefully this eco-friendly holiday celebration becomes an annual tradition! I've heard about this but had not seen the pics until this post. I think these lights on the Christmas tree are a major sign that LED lighting is going to become the major form of light bulbs in the next few years!
